W1: A Systematic Approach to Managing Psychosocial Risk
Recommended for Senior Managers, HR Managers, Project Managers, OH&S Officers & Policy Makers
The inherently stressful nature of aid work demands that organisations meet their duty of care responsibilities through the implementation of comprehensive systems of staff support.
This two day workshop provides a practical guide to assist organisations to adopt a systematic approach to managing the complex range of psychosocial risks encountered by aid workers in both emergency and development settings.
The workshop will present a shared responsibility model of risk management in which the organisation, managers, staff and volunteers all contribute to preventing, mitigating and managing psychosocial risks through collaborative appraisal, monitoring and consultative planning.
Participants will be introduced to practical risk management tools and policy frameworks specifically tailored for the aid sector. Consideration is given to the diverse nature of aid agency staff and the need to develop systems of care applicable to whole staff teams including national and international staff as well as those working at Headquarter level.
A case study approach will be used to demonstrate how systematic approaches to staff care can be implemented across the deployment or employment cycle. Ample opportunity will be given for shared discussion and problem solving of typical situations encountered on assignment.
Participants will have the opportunity to review their own organisation's current policies and practices related to staff care during the course of the workshop.
