In addition to the main Vocations in Aid (ViA) conference and exhibition taking place on Friday 7th December, the Mandala Foundation is offering a half-day workshop in the afternoon preceding the conference.
The workshop 'Cross-Cultural Preparation for International Aid Work & Volunteering' offers prospective aid and development workers and volunteers the opportunity to focus on a specific aspect of preparation for overseas assignment work.
The workshop has been designed especially to address the needs of individual aid workers and volunteers. Managers within organisations wishing to gain insight into the preparation needs of staff and volunteers being deployed overseas are also welcome to join the workshop.
The workshop will be followed by a sector network meeting co-hosted by the Melbourne Development Circle, open to all members of the international aid and development sector community.
Cross-Cultural Preparation for International Aid Work & Volunteering
Facilitator: Letty Tumbaga, Psychologist, Mandala Foundation
Recommended for prospective humanitarian aid and/or international development staff or volunteers
Working effectively in cross-cultural contexts and culturally diverse teams requires recognising, honouring and valuing similarities as well as differences in belief systems, values, and approaches.
This half-day workshop will consider topics such as culturally diverse work styles, communication skills, issues of identity and perceptions and different cultural approaches to managing stress, in diverse cultural environments.
As a result of this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of cultural frameworks and develop strategies for dealing with ‘culture shock’, supporting their own cultural adjustment, and related transitions both upon arrival to their assignment location and upon return to their home country.
The workshop will provide an interactive opportunity to discuss and explore the complexities of working in a different culture and apply a practical tool and tips for supporting cross-cultural preparation and awareness.
